Most of the world has been modernized and most countries have the same wedding traits as the other but some still practice there own unique wedding ritual. Japan is one of those countries that is split with traditional and contemporary weddings. Traditional weddings in japan are very elaborate and symbolic.

The traditional wedding in Japan is called a Shinto Ceremony. Shinto means the spirit of Japan, it is what links their culture from past to present. In the wedding, the bride is painted white from head to toe. This is to show the gods her maiden status, very beautiful symbolism is shown here. The bride is adorned with a Tsunokakushi which is a type of hat used to “hide her horns of selfishness, jealousy, pride and ego. Is symbolizes that she will become a loving, obedient wife. Then groom will often wear a haoiri-hakama, a men’s kimono.

The ceremony takes place at a Shinto Shrine. At the shrine a ritual is performed called San-San-Kudo. This ritual is where the bride and groom exchange nuptial cups and then sips of “sake” are taken by family members to signify the joining of two families. To end the ceremony the newly weds then offer twigs of sakaki in the sanctuary of the Shinto Shrine to thank the gods and give worship. The ceremony itself is very short but full of ancient wonder and tradition.

Overall the ceremony is very beautiful. I would love to witness one and actually be married in Japan like this. A few last fun facts before you go, at the ceremony sometime 1000 paper cranes are set up and if you are attending a reception or giving gifts, most of the time it is cash money that you must give. Other gifts are considered rude.
